I) HAD BETTER LÀ GÌ?
Had better có nghĩa là “nên, tốt hơn nên”, thường được dùng trong câu khuyên người khác làm gì.
II) CẤU TRÚC HAD BETTER:

| S + had better + V(nguyên thể)
Eg: You don’t look well. You had better stay at home today. (Nhìn bạn không khỏe. Bạn nên ở nhà hôm nay) |
S + had better not + V(nguyên thể)
Eg: You don’t look well. You had better not go to school today. (Nhìn bạn không khỏe. Bạn không nên đi học hôm nay) |
Had S better V(nguyên thể)?
Eg: Had I better bring an umbrella? (Tôi có nên mang ô không?) |
III) PHÂN BIỆT HAD BETTER VÀ SHOULD:

Eg: You should eat vegetables. (Bạn nên ăn rau củ quả) |
IV) PHÂN BIỆT HAD BETTER VÀ WOULD RATHER:

| (nên, tốt hơn nên làm gì…): mang nghĩa khuyên răn ai đó làm gì
Eg: It’s getting dark. We had better go home right now. (Trời bắt đầu tối rồi. Chúng ta nên về nhà ngay lập tức) |
(thích…hơn): mang nghĩa bày tỏ mong muốn của người nói về điều gì
Eg: I would rather stay at home on a rainy day. (Tôi thích ở nhà vào ngày mưa hơn) |
V) BÀI TẬP BỔ TRỢ:
Bài 1: Đưa ra lời khuyên cho nhân vật trong những câu sau:
1, Mary is sleep-deprived and often feels tired.
=> (sleep enough)
2, Maria is always late and she will have an important meeting this afternoon.
=> (hurry up)
3, It is forecasted to be getting cold this afternoon.
=> (bring a coat)
4, Mat scored badly in midterm exam and he is likely to fail this subject.
=> (study hard for the final exam)
5, Mathew has recently had a breakdown.
=> (see the doctor)
6, Mary has got tired at work and she needs rest.
=> (go home)
7, Ross has 1 hour left to finish the homework but he hasn’t started.
=> (start doing homework)
8, Clara hasn’t paid the bill and it’s likely that power will go out.
=> (pay the bill)
9, Rachel intends to eat at a famous restaurant.
=> (reserve a table)
10, Chandler need to clean up the house before Monica comes home
=> (clean up the house)
Bài 2: Điền “had better” hoặc “should”:
